Miniature Horse Association of Australia
The Miniature Horse is exactly what its name says: a well conformed, active, freemoving horse in miniature. Miniature and Small Horses are one of the fastest growing breeds in Australia. Their stature, good temperament and character appeal to all ages.
Australian Miniature Horses are registered in 2 categories:
- Miniature Horse: not exceeding 34" as an adult
- Small Horse: not exceeding 38" as an adult.
(There are also specific height-for-age requirements for each category.)
Miniature & Small Horses are popular as companion animals. They compete at shows around Australia at halter, in harness and in performance events. Because these horses require less space & feed than their larger cousins, it's practical for a horselover with a small acreage to even have their own Miniature Horse stud.
About the Breed
If there were no size reference in sight, a Miniature Horse could seem to be a full-sized horse. General impression is of refinement, symmetry, agility and alert intelligence. Gait is free, swinging & fluid. A Miniature Horse should be compact & well muscled. Good temperament is a must: curious, alert & friendly.
The breed standard calls for a broad forehead with large expressive eyes, the eartips curving slightly inward, lustrous coat and relatively long, slender legs. All eye colours, coat colours & markings are acceptable.
- Mares: refined, feminine
- Stallions: bold, masculine
