Prime SAMM Breeders' Society of Australia

The breed features good quality wool, and lambs that attain excellent slaughter weight at a young age. Prime SAMM sheep are hardy and adaptable.
Ewes have good mothering instinct & high milk production.
Breed History
A small flock of German Mutton Merino sheep was imported to South Africa in 1932 for a government breeding program. Many years of planned breeding produced sheep suited to South African conditions, with improved wool quality & conformation. The resultant South African Mutton Merino was recognised as a breed in 1971.
South African Mutton Merino sires have been used in developing other South African sheep breeds, including the Dohne Merino and Afrino.
South African Mutton Merino sheep arrived in Australia in 1996. At first known here as South African Meat Merinos, the breed was soon renamed 'Prime SAMM'.
